in the darkness I swim out to sea
after a while the outline of the beach fades
the shore-lights a distant blur
as my eyes adjust to the unbroken darkness, slowly the changes on the surface become
a faint glimmer catches my eye
I reach out for it, as if drawn by an invisible force, beckoning me from the depths
my hand lingers
then reaches inside
from the darkness emerges a pearl, shaped as a tear
once a piece of sand, perhaps a parasite, a threat
now encased in nacre
as I hold the pearl up to my eye it produces a radiant light

Iridescence is an optical property where the color of an object is determined by the angle of the viewer, often observed in a puddle of an oil spill, soap bubbles or the surface of a compact disc. The seven sparse pieces on Acasta Gneiss’ Glimmer have a similar quality. Building on repetitive structures these compositions drift in and out of focus, seemingly changing with each iteration. As the album progresses ethereal synth pads are contrasted with recordings inspired by asmr practices, heavily processed using digital techniques. Glimmer offers an immersive, sometimes unnerving experience, but ultimately hopeful, like a faint, wavering, light in the distance illuminating the darkness.
Acasta Gneiss is an experimental music producer, programmer and DJ based in Brussels. His minimal compositions are built from recurring structures that aim to explore how we construct our reality. He is the co-founder of Anterior Insula and resident DJ at Kiosk Radio.
